History

More than 120 Years of Caring and Service to the Community

Immanuel Health Systems has a rich history of compassionate service to Omaha and the surrounding area.

How Immanuel Began

Pastor Fogelstrom

In 1887, Pastor Fogelstrom and five Deaconesses created a ministry that emphasized “works of mercy.” As their ministry progressed, the works of these individuals developed into programs that served the sick, cared for and educated orphaned and neglected children, and offered support for widows and the elderly, which set the course for Immanuel’s future.

Immanuel Today

Inspired by Pastor Fogelstrom and guided by the Nebraska Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Immanuel Health Systems established their Identity Statement, Christ In Us, Christ Through Us. “Recognizing that all we have comes from God, we are called to be faithful stewards of God’s resources and courageous servant leaders filling gaps in community health.”

1890 First Deaconesses
  • In 1995 Immanuel Senior Living was established to serve and provide innovative services to seniors of all income levels.
  • In 1996 Immanuel became a co-sponsor of Alegent Health, the region’s largest health care system.

Immanuel and its health care partner, Alegent Health, are inspired by our heritage to develop a Christ-centered continuum of senior housing and services that is coordinated, comprehensive and accessible.  We are committed to transforming the future of senior housing, services and health care.

Over a century ago, the people of Immanuel were committed to a philosophy of improving lives by expressing Christ’s love through works of mercy. This ministry continues to be the hallmark of Immanuel Senior Living today.
